There is a truth to glean from a Pennsylvania field that can save the world. And we will miss it… if we don’t turn our eyes to see and our ears to hear.
A lot of us are taking stock of where our country is right now. Our heads are spinning as we have watched these recent heartbreaking events unfold. We are dazed and confused.
How do we make sense of it all?
We must turn to God. Throughout Scripture, God speaks symbolically through the events that happen in our world. This is how He communicates, and He hasn’t stopped. We must listen to what He is saying through the crazy events unfolding in our time. He has a lot to say if we will give him our ear.
The tall man in a dark suit and red baseball cap spoke in the blistering heat to a boisterous crowd. He turned his head slightly to the right, and we heard the pops. It sounded like firecrackers to the casual ear, but the trained ear immediately knew it was sniper fire.
Do we have trained ears?
The tall man dropped to his knees and was immediately covered by his Secret Service detail. When he emerged, with that iconic fist thrust in the air reassuring his adoring fans, we saw the blood trickling down his face from his ear.
Are we listening?
The most worshiped and reviled man in the world came less than an inch from certain death on live TV. Had he not turned his eyes to the right, the back of his brain would’ve been blown off by that bullet. JFK all over again.
But he did turn his eyes. And the bullet grazed his ear. Don’t let this symbolic truth escape you—the bullet could have hit his brain or his heart or his hair or it could have missed him altogether. But it didn’t. The bullet hit his ear. His ear. This is no coincidence.
Are we listening to what God is saying? Are we hearing his voice?
Donald Trump was supposed to die on July 13th, 2024, and he didn’t.
But the tragic truth is—someone did die. A bullet intended for Donald Trump killed another man. Corey Comperatore was his name. This heroic father threw his body over his wife and daughter to save their lives. He was a pillar in his church and a firefighter. His profession was literally saving lives.
Two other men were critically injured, David Dutch and James Copenhaver. Three men were shot—but only one man died for someone else that day. A bullet meant for Donald Trump killed another man. We can truthfully say that another man died in his place. An innocent man.
But he wasn’t the first innocent man to die for Donald Trump.
No, that man died over 2000 years ago.
Do we have ears to hear what the Lord is saying?
There has been a shift in our country that seems unmistakable since that fateful day in the Keystone State. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, a Christian or a Muslim, a spiritualist or a materialist, whether you love politics or you are repulsed by them, you must at least suspect some providence, some divine intervention in what happened on that field in Pennsylvania.
A mere centimeter came between life and death for a man who may be the next leader of the free world. And someone innocent died from a bullet intended for a man who represents the highest power on the globe.
Fellow Americans and citizens of the world—no man can save us. We cannot vote a savior into the Oval Office this November. Our world is spiraling out of control and we are to blame. We’ve all fallen short of God’s glory, of the one who made us. (Romans 3:23) This is the truth revealed in our Holy Book, and it is the reality we live in. This is the mess we’ve made. We are staring down the barrel of a gun, and there isn’t much hope.
But listen to the good news! Attune your ear to what the Lord is saying…
A man has died for us. That man died 2000 years ago.
Time and again, throughout the Gospels, Jesus would give a difficult message. The people would look at him, at times dazed and confused by the symbolic stories he would tell. And Jesus would simply say,
“He who has ears, let him hear.” (Matt. 11:15, Mark 4:9. 23)
We all have ears, but are we listening?
Yes, we live in a world where evil things happen to good people. But no man is innocent. No woman is pure. We only get so many trips around the sun. At some point, we will all meet our Maker.
I don’t know why an innocent man died from a bullet meant for Donald Trump. But I do know why the first man died for Donald Trump. That man was Jesus Christ. He died to save Trump, and he died to save you and me.
Let that truth sink deep into your heart today. Let your ears hear that good news loud and clear—what happened to Donald Trump on that field in Pennsylvania has happened to all of us.
An innocent man has died in our place.
We are all very concerned about who is going to win in November, as we should be. This decision doesn’t just affect our nation—it affects the world.
I believe that as Christians, we have a civic duty to vote in this upcoming election. In my opinion, the policies of one party are far closer to the biblical standard than the other party. We must spend some serious time on our knees and vote for the policies in line with those biblical ideals.
And we must know that the candidates who lead both parties nationally, at the state level, and locally will be flawed. Some of them, deeply flawed. Still, it is our civic duty and our Christian responsibility in a constitutional republic to vote. And it is our responsibility to pray.
But make no mistake about it—that vote will not save us.
Those candidates will not save this nation.
Only one man can save this nation, and that man took a bullet for each and every one of us 2000 years ago.
Do we have eyes to see what is so clear?
God has intervened. God has taken our punishment for us. Just like what happened on that Pennsylvania field, a bullet meant for us has killed another.
Jesus has died in our place.
As Americans, we need to humble ourselves. Like Trump on that stage, we must turn our eyes and fall to our knees. We must attune our ears to His voice.
Do not be mistaken. Donald Trump cannot save us or this nation. But the man who died for him 2000 years ago can. He is the only man who can save us personally. He is the only man who can save this nation. And He is the only man who can save the world.
“For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned.”
Most of us know these verses. John 3:16-17 is the most famous portion of Scripture in the Bible. Hear the good news! You don’t have to die. Listen! Someone has died in your place.
But we often stop after these two verses. Listen to the sobering words that Jesus said right after sharing the good news:
“But whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light.” (John 3:18b-20)
That is a pretty dark passage. It doesn’t get much darker. Jesus says that these people insist on looking into the darkness. They will not turn their eyes. They will not see the light. So they are condemned—they are going to die.
But still there is the hope… Jesus continues,
“But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light.” (John 3:21)
In the face of imminent death, Donald Trump turned his eyes to the right. You and I must turn our eyes to the light.
We must fall to our knees and behold the light that is our Savior, Jesus Christ. If we will turn our eyes to the light, He will save us. He has died in our place, but we must bend our knees and turn our eyes to the light.
If you need for Christ to save you, pray this prayer right now:
“Dear heavenly Father, I’ve messed up. I’ve sinned. I don’t deserve you or your salvation, but I am bending my knees, and I’m turning my eyes to You. You are my only hope in this crazy, lost world. I accept your death in my place. Forgive me. Save me. Restore me. And redeem me. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.”
God is speaking to us through the extraordinary, supernatural events that are happening in our world. May we all have ears to hear what the Lord is saying.
