Many of us parents face the dilemma of sending our kids to a secular college or university that is antagonistic to our faith, antagonistic to much of what we have spent the better part of two decades teaching our kids. It is a troubling place to be. Yet, here we are.
So… there I was at my daughter’s college orientation to our local state-funded university last month, and I can’t say that what happened was unexpected, but it was disconcerting none-the-less. I could feel my anxiety rising as student leader after student leader after student leader shared their name, their major, and their preferred pronouns. After the 12th kid told us that he was a “they/them” or a “she/her” (I can’t recall), I leaned over to my husband and said, “Do they really expect us to remember their personal preferred pronouns? Like.. seriously?”
That is the expectation these days. And you are hateful if you don’t comply.
Mind you… no other political references were made. No other religious beliefs were stated. Yet despite claiming a commitment to rigorous intellectual debate and freedom of thought, this school presented only one view on gender.
Then countless faculty members and administrators assured us trusting parents that they were going to prepare our kids live in the “real world.”
The irony was palpable.
This woke institution is intent on preparing our kids to live in the “real world,” yet it won’t even prepare our kids to live in their “real bodies.”
I had a hot and holy faceplant. I could feel my righteous indignation rising.
But when the university proudly proclaimed its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) standards in signage, break-out sessions, and community-wide lectures… I could remain silent no more.
Nothing could be more uniform, preferential, and exclusive than presenting one view on gender and ignoring all others. You guys, this perspective isn’t even scientific.
So… shocker… I wrote the university a letter, which I share in the latest episode of CHRISTIAN PARENT/CRAZY WORLD. The purpose of this open letter is to show how the university is violating not God’s standard, or my standard… but their own standard.
Also in this episode, I share some vitally important perspectives, both Christian and secular, on the dangers of using preferred pronouns.
Moms & dads… we’ve got to speak up on this issue. And yes, we will be called hateful names when we do. But we must do it anyways.
