In our busy, “do-all-the-things” world, it seems like stress and impatience sneak into even the best Christian homes. If you’ve ever lost your cool, felt stretched thin, or gone to bed wishing you could have been a calmer parent that day—you are not alone. In fact, it’s one of the top struggles we hear about in our community.
That’s why we’re focusing this week on five practical, faith-centered habits that will actually reduce stress (rather than just add another item to your to-do list!). On our latest “best of” episode, I sat down with Elizabeth Andreyevskiy—mom of four, stress coach for Christian women, and host of the Emotionally Healthy Legacy podcast. Elizabeth has walked through the fire of mom stress herself, and now she’s passionate about helping other parents find more margin, more patience, and more joy.
1️ Rise Before the Chaos – Elizabeth’s #1 tip? Don’t hit snooze until your kids wake you up in full-on “mom/dad, I need you!” mode. Try waking just a little earlier. A half hour to drink your coffee, worship, pray, read your Bible, and simply sit in stillness can fortify you for the day ahead. This small act is a game-changer for your mood and patience (even if you don’t consider yourself a “morning person”).
2️ Journal Out Your Emotions (and Let God In) – Modern life encourages us to stuff down our feelings until we erupt. Instead, pour your frustrations, worries, and longings onto paper. Elizabeth suggests starting your entries as a letter or prayer to God. Just like David in the Psalms, you can process confusion, sadness, or anger in His presence—and you’ll finish feeling lighter and more faith-filled.
3️ Silence the Digital Noise – Phones are designed to hook our attention, but those constant notifications (and endless scrolling) only crank up the overwhelm. Turn off app notifications. Set specific windows for social media. Choose presence with your family first, and watch your reactivity and anxiety shrink. Bonus: you’ll model strong boundaries and healthy tech habits for your kids.
4️ Guard Your White Space – Are you and your kids rushing from school to practice to errands every day? Overscheduling leaves little room for anyone’s heart or soul to reset. Give yourself permission to say “no”—even to good things. Look for activities that are truly life-giving for your family and protect empty blocks on your calendar as sacred time for rest and connection.
5️ Ask for—and Accept—Help – You are not meant to do this alone! Whether it’s your spouse, older children, neighbors, friends, or the church family, reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Sometimes, helping hands and a listening ear are exactly what you need to return to your family with fresh patience and compassion. And if you’re not sure who to ask, pray and ask the Lord to show you someone—He is faithful to provide.
Elizabeth reminds us that prioritizing your relationship with God, protecting your needs (without guilt!), and releasing perfection help break the cycles of burnout, reactivity, and “mom rage.” These aren’t just self-care buzzwords—they’re means of grace to help you love your family well.
Don’t miss our upcoming series on creativity in faith with Isaac & Emily Gay! We’ll unpack how beauty, art, and creative expression have always been at the heart of the Church, and how reclaiming this legacy could draw a skeptical, hurting world back to Christ.
