So there I was, scrolling through Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the “100 greatest Christmas movies of all time,” expecting Miracle on 34th Street, It’s a Wonderful Life, maybe even Elf. And they were there.

But then I saw it.
Sitting smugly at number four—top five, folks!—was a film called Tangerine. Never heard of it. I had to read the description. Here it is, straight from Rotten Tomatoes:
“After hearing that her boyfriend/pimp cheated on her while she was in jail, a transgender sex worker [AKA prostitute], and her best friend set out to find him and teach him and his new lover a lesson.”
Say what?
Apparently, the whole movie takes place on Christmas Eve, which made it a “holiday classic” in the eyes of the critics, earning a 96% “fresh” rating. My jaw hit the floor. Revenge, profanity, and a plot centered on transgender prostitution—this is what’s being hailed as classic Christmas entertainment?
That mind-boggling review lit a fire in me to hunt down movies that actually uplift, inspire, value family, and celebrate the true reason for the season. I went searching for hidden gems—faith-forward, family-friendly picks for every member of your crew.
So I’m re-airing this “best-of” favorite this Christmas on Christian Parent/Crazy World , so I can take a break and watch a movie with my kiddos.
Here’s a sneak peek, Cliff Notes version of my unique lineup that’s sure to lift your spirits and maybe even start a new tradition in your house:
· 🧒 Kids’ Pick: Journey to the Christmas Star
A delightful Norwegian fairy tale from 2012, this film follows Sonja, a brave orphan, as she searches for the missing Christmas Star to lift a curse over the kingdom. It’s enchanting, wholesome, and full of culture, with a strong family theme—though there is a witch who casts spells as you’d expect in this genre. Dubbed in English and available to stream free (with ads) on Amazon Prime.
· 💂 Guys’/Teens’ Pick: Joyeux Noel
Set during World War I, this powerful true story recounts a miraculous Christmas Eve ceasefire when enemies lay down their arms and celebrate Christ’s birth together. It’s mature (PG-13), with a moving exploration of faith, war, and shared humanity—best for older teens and adults. Available for rent ($3.59) on Amazon Prime.
· 💃 Girls’ Pick: The Christmas Candle
Adapted from Max Lucado’s novel, this British period piece has candles, angels, miracles, and small-town intrigue. Does God still perform miracles? This tender PG-rated story sparks family discussion—even if the critics missed its heart. Stream for free (with ads) on Amazon Prime.
· 💑 Date Night Pick: The Family Man
Starring Nicolas Cage and Téa Leoni—he’s a high-flying exec who wakes up to the road not taken: a life with his college sweetheart, two kids, and a humble job. Hilarious, heartwarming, and a big dose of perspective about what really matters. PG-13, with some funny parenting moments—best saved for after the kids are in bed. Free for a limited time on Amazon Prime.
· 👪 Family Pick: The Nativity Story
My absolute favorite. Relive Mary and Joseph’s courageous journey to Bethlehem, with Oscar Isaac as Joseph. It’s beautifully crafted, biblically “by the book” (mostly), and perfect for refocusing your family’s holiday on Christ. For the little kids, skip the opening scene where Herod sends soldiers to kill the Messiah. Rent for $3.99 on Amazon Prime (we own this one and watch it every year!)

These discussions are a powerful way to help your kids think critically, build their faith, and grow closer as a family.
Moms and dads, our culture doesn’t always make it easy to keep Christ at the center of Christmas—or our family entertainment. But you don’t have to settle for what Hollywood dishes out. Curate your family’s viewing with intention and discernment.
Remember: God gave you your specific kids for a reason. You hold the key to unlocking who He created them to be.
Let’s embrace the season with joy, truth, and love—beginning right here, in our living rooms.
Merry Christmas, friends! 🎁
