Every Christian parent will walk through seasons of unexpected loss, heartbreak, disorientation, and unmet expectations. We can’t choose whether we face these curveballs—only HOW we walk through them. The real, life-changing choice is this: Will we simply get through the pain—or will we step forward as true overcomers, carrying away spiritual plunder and treasure that can only be earned in adversity?
Overcoming isn’t about pretending things are okay or slapping a Bible verse on your pain; it’s about learning to persevere, to wrestle with God, and to become someone different—stronger, deeper, freer, and more grounded in Him. No one escapes hard seasons, but those who overcome gain wisdom, resilience, and hope that will bless them and their families for life.
That’s why I am so passionate about this week’s episode of Christian Parent/Crazy World. We continue our vulnerable, hope-filled conversation with Dr. Erin Barry, who just happens to be the very first guest I ever featured on CP/CW!
Dr. Erin Barry is a clinical Christian counselor, author, speaker, and educational consultant with decades of experience shepherding families through seasons of grief, change, and uncertainty. She co-founded the Home Educated Mind with her husband, Brett, and is an unwavering voice of biblical truth and practical wisdom for everyone who knows her—including me, especially in my hardest seasons.
It’s an honor to welcome Dr. Barry back, as she offers grounded advice for anyone longing to not just survive, but truly overcome.
🔥 Every Change Requires Grieving—and Brings Opportunity.
Dr. Barry shares why all change, even positive new beginnings, include some level of loss and pain. Grieving well is the gateway to moving forward; it’s here that God begins working transformation.
💪 Only the Hard Road Produces “Spiritual Plunder.”
We discuss the biblical principle of wrestling with God—refusing to let go until He turns even our deepest heartache into wisdom, faith, and greater dependence on Him. These hard-won blessings cannot be gathered in any other way.
⚡ Ditching “Hallmark Theology.”
Life is not a sanitized movie—faith grows in pain, and false expectations must be put to rest. Hardship shakes loose our false identities so the value we place on success, roles, or easy seasons is replaced by confidence that we are God’s children, loved apart from what we do.
🎶 The Sacrifice of Praise
Worship is easy in comfort, but powerful and life-changing in heartbreak. We talk candidly about what it means to offer God the sacrifice of praise in the darkest moments—and how it drives the enemy crazy (while delighting our Father.)
🤝 The Power of Godly Community
Whether it’s grief share, prodigal support groups, or trusted friends, we need people who will sit with us in the fire, pray over our children by name, and walk alongside us through every twist in the journey.
Don’t miss this continuation of my conversation with the wise, compassionate Dr. Erin Barry. Discover how you can gain more than you lose—even when life turns upside down.

💬 A Quote to Reflect On
“When it comes to a dark season, our only choice is this—
What are you gonna take out of it? Are you gonna take bitterness? Are you gonna stay angry at God and be bitter and never get any fruit or plunder or goodness out of it? Or are you gonna say, ‘Okay, God, despite this horrific situation, You’re going to do something good from it.’”
~Catherine Segars
No one gets an easy pass through life’s storms. But you do get a choice: will you be left only with scars, or will you gather the spiritual plunder—the lessons, the hope, the capacity for worship, the new identity in Christ—to bless your children for generations? Stay in the fight, keep wrestling in prayer, surround yourself with faithful friends, and offer your sacrifice of praise.
Let’s leave bitterness behind and become overcomers who can truly say:
“I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” (Psalm 27:13)
➡️ Listen and share this two-part conversation with a friend in a hard season.
➡️ Seek out a faithful community—don’t walk these valleys alone.
➡️ Ask God what good, what plunder, He might want to bring forth from your hardest chapter yet.
🌱 Are you in a season of grief, confusion, or unmet expectations?
🙏 How can you turn to God in honest wrestling, instead of turning away?
👨👩👧👦 What plunder might this curveball prepare you to pass on to your children?
God’s greatest work often comes in the darkest times. May you see His goodness, gather the fruit, and pass on a legacy of overcoming.
