Ever feel like your household is one big, beautiful, messy, exhausting tornado? Like you’re the ringmaster of a circus you did not sign up to lead?
Welcome to life in an ADHD family.
Around here, we don’t just lose things—we strategically relocate them to places that no human would ever think to check. (Why are my keys in the fridge? No one knows.) We don’t just forget appointments—we time-travel past them entirely. And emotional regulation? Unregulated empathy anyone? Angsting over a relational mole hill or over a complete stranger’s mountain can keep me up all night. Sometimes my mind can turn into a hamster wheel that I just can’t get off.
If any of this sounds even remotely familiar, then boy do I have an episode for you!
This week on CHRISTIAN PARENT/CRAZY WORLD, I sat down for part 2 of my conversation with Dr. Tamara Rosier, one of the top ADHD experts in the country. She’s the founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan, president of the ADHD Coaches Organization, and the author of You, Me, and Our ADHD Family. Basically, she’s spent years studying people like me and my family—people who, despite our best intentions, often find ourselves running late, losing track of what we were saying, and wondering why we just walked into the kitchen.
Oh, and Tamara didn’t just study ADHDrs for the fun of it. She’s one of us. Yep, Tamara is a card-carrying member of the ADHD club! Which is why this episode is so wacky. Get two ADHD gals together for a podcast, and there’s a lot of fun and enlightening left turns that miraculously arrive at a valuable destination. Kind of like our lives….
Managing ADHD isn’t as simple as setting reminders on our phones (though I have tried). It’s about understanding how ADHD brains work and figuring out strategies that actually make sense. (Because let’s be real—traditional organization methods do not apply when your brain operates like 54 browser tabs open at once, all playing music at full volume.)
Btw, here is a screen shot of my current Chrome browser:
And I have 2 more Chrome windows open with multiple tabs as well. I’m not kidding.
You guys… this is literally what my brain looks like. And my house.
🌀 Why ADHD Runs in Families – If your child’s ADHD behaviors seem oddly familiar, you’re not imagining it—genetics play a big role. Someone had to pass down the “Where’s my phone? Oh, it’s in my hand” gene.
🌊 The Emotional Pool – ADHD brains feel everything intensely, making family life an emotional rollercoaster. Tamara and I discuss how to ride the waves instead of getting swept away.
🎯 The Magic of Hyperfocus – ADHD isn’t just about distraction—it can be about deep, laser-focused interest. The challenge? Channeling that intensity into what actually needs doing.
🎨 The Gift of Divergent Thinking – Many brilliant minds—Edison, da Vinci, countless inventors—likely had ADHD. Thinking differently isn’t a weakness; it can make you a genius (when you can find your keys and get out of the house).
🛠️ Practical Strategies That Work – Tamara shares science-backed tips to help ADHD families thrive—because apparently yelling “JUST FOCUS!” for the 500th time isn’t the answer. (Who knew?)
Yes… you read that right. Here’s the part that still blows my mind—my daughter’s ADHD diagnosis ended up leading to a life-changing opportunity. She received a full-ride scholarship because of her unique way of thinking, which the state of Alabama considers a disability. Yep, sometimes the very thing that seems like a struggle turns out to be an incredible gift.Tune in to this week’s episode to hear all about it!
Let me say (again) for the parents in the back whose kids keep forgetting to turn in their homework—ADHD is not a life sentence to struggle forever. It can be a beautiful gift when we learn how to work with it instead of against it.
And… we’re giving away a copy of Dr. Rosier’s brand new book, You, Me, & Our ADHD Family: Practical Steps to Cultivate Healthy Relationships! It’s packed with insights and strategies that will help you manage a home with ADHD.
