If you’re like me, you want your kids to grow up with generous hearts—hearts that notice the needs around them and feel a responsibility to respond. But in a culture where the loudest message is “look out for number one,” that’s no easy task.
So how do we raise kids who see beyond themselves?
How do we build families that serve together—not just on mission trips or holidays, but right in the messy middle of everyday life?
That’s the conversation we’re having in this week’s episode of Christian Parent / Crazy World. I sat down with Luke Mickelson, the founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, and had a surprisingly hilarious conversation about what started out as an ordinary Saturday, but ended up as a movement that is literally changing the world.
🛏️ Over 300,000 beds.
That’s how far Luke’s simple yes has gone—from one child in his town sleeping on a pile of clothes in the corner, to a movement that’s changing lives all across the country.
Listen as Luke shares the unforgettable story of Haley, a precious 6-year-old child who had never slept in her own bed:

But this story isn’t just about beds.
It’s about the power of a family stepping up together to meet a need.
💡 What You’ll Take Away from This Episode:
🪵 Start Small. Start Now.
Luke didn’t set out to start a nonprofit. He saw one need and met it. That first step was the spark. You don’t need a platform or a plan—just a willingness to act on what’s right in front of you.
👀 Kids Do What We Do, Not Just What We Say.
Generosity is caught, not taught. When our kids see us roll up our sleeves, sacrifice time, and get uncomfortable for someone else’s good—that sticks with them.
🏡 Your Community Is Your Calling.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace has a bold motto: “No kid sleeps on the floor in my town.”
What if we took that level of ownership over our neighborhoods, schools, and churches?
🔄 Serving Changes Everyone.
This isn’t just about blessing someone in need—it’s about transformation in us. Serving as a family strengthens bonds, shifts perspectives, and deepens our faith.
👨👩👧👦 You Can Serve Together.
Luke designed this ministry to involve the whole family. You don’t need special skills. Just a willingness to show up and work together.
🏃♂️ Inspiration Isn’t Enough—Take Action.
We all want to make a difference. But the world won’t change because of our good intentions—it changes when we move.
🙌 Ready to Get Started?
If you’ve been feeling a holy nudge to do more—to get your family involved in something that matters—this episode will fuel that fire. You’ll laugh, maybe tear up a little, and walk away with tangible ways to put faith into action.

Let’s be the kind of parents who raise the next generation of world-changers—not with lectures, but with lives lived in service. Let’s show our kids what it looks like to be the hands and feet of Jesus—right in our own backyard.
Together, we can build more than beds.
We can build a legacy of love, one act of generosity at a time.
Guest Bio: Luke Mickelson is the founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need. What started in his garage as a holiday project in 2012 has grown into a global movement, with over 350 chapters in four countries and more than 250,000 beds delivered. As the cause kept growing, Luke left an 18-year career to devote himself fully to the cause. SHP now has volunteers devoting 550,000 hours on average every year. Built on the belief that giving a bed is about more than comfort — it’s about dignity, purpose, and connection.
Takeaway:
You don’t need to change the world—just meet a need around you with your kids by your side. Faith comes alive when paired with action, and generous families don’t just bless others…they find the fullness of life God intends.
Don’t miss this motivating and deeply practical conversation—perfect for families who want to model Christ’s love in real, tangible ways.
