If you’ve ever stood at the threshold of letting your children go—whether that looks like the first day of preschool, launching them to college, or watching them step into adulthood—you know it’s one of the most soul-stretching experiences a parent can face.
For Christian parents, letting go is not just about releasing control—it’s a profound act of faith, trust, and stewardship. How do we release our children in a godly way, one that keeps the doors of communication open and maximizes our lasting influence? How do we entrust our children to the God who loves them more than we ever could, while learning to lead from a place of trust, not anxiety or control?
That is the raw and vulnerable journey we take in the latest episode of Christian Parent/Crazy World🎙️
Jaime Hampton is more than a fellow podcaster—she’s a seasoned mom of three (one who’s already launched into college!), the cohost of the Praying Christian Women Podcast, and a woman passionate about equipping parents through prayer. With her real-world wisdom from the trenches of parenting and a heart for prayerful living, Jaime brings incredible insight to this conversation about letting go.
In this conversation, we traced the long arc of letting our children go—because, believe it or not, it doesn’t begin with car keys or college drop-off day. It begins in the delivery room, when the umbilical cord is cut and the first act of release takes place. From there, every season of parenting is a collection of holy hand-offs, each inviting us to loosen our grip just a little more.
🍼✔️ The Four Phases of Parenthood
From caregiver to cop, coach to counselor—Jaime and I unpack how parenting shifts as our children grow. Recognizing which phase we’re in helps us avoid the trap of overstepping or disengaging too soon. As parents, our influence moves from direct control to guiding, then ultimately to offering counsel when asked.
✨ Letting Go Starts Early
Letting go reflects our role as stewards, not owners. As children mature, we learn to release authority in stages, placing their future increasingly in God’s hands.
🙏 Prayer Is Our Greatest Authority
When we have no control over our children’s circumstances, especially as they grow, prayer becomes our most powerful form of influence. Jaime shares how praying John 17—Jesus’ prayer for His disciples—transformed her perspective as she released her son into public school and later, into college.
💔 When Kids Don’t Need Us the Same Way
Both Jaime and I tell stories of realizing our kids are growing more independent—and sometimes, we’re the last to know! These moments are hard, but they’re a sign of growth and God’s work in their lives.
🗝️ Operating in the Right Parenting Phase
Switching from “caregiver” to “cop” to “coach” to “counselor” as our kids become adults is critical for keeping the relationship strong. Our job is not to convict or control—but to trust, pray, and be available for godly counsel when invited.

“Our greatest influence over the lives of our kids happens on our knees. We have authority over what we have authored, and when we pray, we are partnering with God to bring forth His will in their lives.”
~ Catherine Segars
Letting go doesn’t mean losing influence—it means shifting it. Parenting in these seasons looks less like control and more like trust: trust in the foundation you’ve laid, the relationship you’ve built, and most of all, in the God who loves your children even more than you do.
No matter what phase you’re in—caregiver, cop, coach, or counselor—your prayers and your willingness to release your kids with open hands still matter deeply.
So be encouraged: God gave you your specific kids for a reason. You hold the key to unlocking who God created them to be. He is faithful, even in the places you can’t reach.
